How do you prevent wood fences from rotting?

If you have a wooden fence, you know that it adds beauty and privacy to your property. However, wooden fences are susceptible to rotting, causing them to weaken and eventually need replacement. Rotting is a common problem for wooden fences, but it can be prevented with proper maintenance.

The best way to prevent wooden fences from rotting is through proper maintenance. This includes cleaning your fence regularly to remove any dirt or debris that can cause moisture buildup. Applying a stain to your fence every 3 – 4 years will also add an extra barrier of protection from moisture that will cause rot. You should also inspect your fence regularly for signs of rot, such as soft or discolored wood. If you do find any signs, it’s important to address the issue right away to prevent it from spreading. Most fence companies will use a rot board or kickboard, at the bottom to help prevent rot in wet or humid climates.

Another way to prevent rot is by using rot-resistant wood. Two types of wood that could be used are cedar and redwood. These are more expensive than typical pine, but they will last longer and require less maintenance to prevent rot. Pressure-treated wood is also an option. While it is more expensive than pine, it is not as big of a price point as cedar or redwood.
